Elementary Program

E-mail Print PDF

The Elementary Program at Intercultural Montessori School offers immersion in Spanish or Japanese. As our preschoolers mature, the school would like to offer an elementary Chinese Mandarin program. At the elementary level there are two class levels in which children are grouped together based on their developmental need. Lower elementary consists of children aged 6-9 years (first to third grade) and upper elementary consists of children aged 9-12 years (fourth to sixth grade).

After students have passed through the preschool program, the amount of English instruction is increased. Therefore, at elementary level the students spend 50% of their day in the target language and 50% of the day in English.

Students cover the entire range of the curriculum in both languages. At the elementary level, they experience what Maria Montessori called a "cosmic curriculum" covering math, language arts, science, history, geography, ecology, and art through the use of activities. This approach leads the students from concrete to abstract learning.

Full Day Elementary Program 8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m.

Students develop independent research skills in all of the subjects. They choose areas of research, write reports, and give oral presentations to their classmates. Students also participate in a week-long trip to Wisconsin to study the environment and ecology in a Montessori setting.
