Dear Intercultural Community,
The day is almost upon us! I wanted to take a moment today to tell you about our special activity for this year’s Gala. In keeping with our Kentucky Derby theme, in lieu of a raffle this year we will have A Night At The Races!
When you check in, you will be asked if you would like to participate in the “A Night at the Races” game. If you participate, a $20 charge will be added to your gala account, and you will be given a racing program and $6 worth of Derby Dollars. Through the course of the evening, there will be six horse races displayed on two screens in the room. Each race will feature a field of 10 horses. For 15 minutes before each race, you can place a $1 bet on the horse of your choice. When the betting for each race closes, I, as your humble Master of Ceremonies, will read off the pay-out for each horse, and the race will be displayed on the two screens. After the race, winners will be paid out and betting will open for the next race. Our plan is to do 6 races between 7:30 and 9:00 pm. It may wind up being fewer depending on time, but our goal is to do 6 races.
At the end of all the races, the person with the most Derby Dollars will win a prize consisting of two special bottles of bourbon and 6 passes to the Arlington International Racecourse, a $150 value!
Some things to note:
1.      You will receive enough Derby Dollars to place one bet on each race.
2.      Each bet is $1.
3.      While there will be horse names in the racing program, make your bets by horse
number. That is what will be displayed during the race.
4.      You can “hedge your bets” by betting on more than one horse per race, but keep in
mind that if you don’t win, you won’t have enough to bet on each race. Once you
are out of Derby Dollars, you are out!
5.      In the event of there being a tie between top Derby Dollar holders, final winner will
be determined by random drawing.
Please feel free to reach out to me, either via e-mail or at the event, if you have any questions! Thanks for reading, and we’ll see you Saturday in your Derby Duds!
Note: As of the sending of this e-mail, roughly 4pm on Thursday, the registration site is having some technical difficulties. They hope to have that up and running within the next hour. We apologize for any inconvenience.
